KIDNAPPING: Women protest ‘incessant abduction of children’ in Kano

Hundreds of women in purdah, and under-aged children, yesterday, in Kano protested incessant abduction of teenagers in the state.

The protesters marched from Kawo area of the municipal to Government House, displaying placards with inscriptions such as “Ganduje halt these senseless
abduction,” “Who is after our children,” “Whoever is after our children is after us.”

However, the protesters were refused entry into Kano Government House by stern-looking security agents at the gate. A senior police officer, who was at the gate during the protest, received a letter from the women and children for onwards delivery to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Addressing reporters, the leader of the protesters, Malama Lami Abubakar, alleged that rampant cases of abduction of under-aged children within and around Kawo quarters of Tarauni Local Government Area and in the metropolis had unsettled families. Lami Abubakar accused the local authorities of doing nothing in the face of worsening security situation, stressing “this is the crisis that we found ourselves in.”

Malama Lami, who betrayed emotions during the briefing, alleged that “in the last three days, two children were discovered in captivity at the residence of a man that is supposed to protect his subjects, but security agents appeared to have compromised investigations.

“We beg for urgent intervention from the Governor and all well-meaning individuals.” The protesting women and their children later marched to the Emir of Kano’s Palace and lodged the same complaint.
