TRAGEDY: 18 die in Kogi, Benue car crashes

A ghastly car crash yesterday claimed 11 lives at Ohiana area, along Okene-Auchi Road in Kogi State, while another seven persons died yesterday along
Otukpo-Enugu Highway, in Benue State, when a truck conveying yams rammed into a car with all seven passengers dying on the spot.
The Okene Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the accident, which occurred around 6:00a.m. was caused by a head-on collision between a bus with Registration No. Delta AYB 939 XP, belonging to Big Joe Transport Company and a trailer, fully-loaded with cement.
FRSC Unit Commander, Dr. Sunday Ogungbemi, said the Toyota Hiace bus, which had 22 passengers on board, was heading to Warri from Abuja when the accident occurred.
He disclosed that the accident was caused by over-speeding on the part of the bus driver, who lost control and crashed into the trailer. He added that 11 bodies had been deposited in the morgue at the Okene General Hospital, while the remaining 11 passengers, who survived but sustained various degrees of injuries, were receiving medical attention in Okene.
Ogungbemi cautioned motorists not to see the highway as a racetrack for unhealthy competition, adding that the accident has justified the reason FRSC is canvassing for the installation of speed limit device on vehicles in order to reduce carnage on the roads.
An eyewitness at the Benue incident said the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a Gulf car, conveying seven passengers including the driver.
Confirming the incident, Otukpo Unit FRSC Commander, Abdulahi Umar, said bodies of the victims had been deposited at Otukpo General hospital.
